You can test quilting designs with vinyl

November 19, 2013

clear vinylIf you’re struggling with how a quilting design might look in your quilt, here’s a great way to audition your ideas. Purchase a length of clear vinyl from the fabric store. Cover all the raw edges of the vinyl with masking tape or blue painter’s tape. This will serve as a visual reminder of the vinyl’s edge.

Place the vinyl sheet over your quilt, and use dry erase markers to test your ideas. Be careful not to mark on your quilt, and lift the vinyl carefully to avoid transferring ink to your quilt.

You can also do the same thing using clear Plexiglas if you prefer a more rigid drawing pad. Tape the edges of the Plexiglas also.
