Quilt pattern: Shining star (free download)
While quilts cover us in warmth, they also provide fond memories. When a client lost his special childhood quilt to a house fire a few years ago, Sheridan Carter of Sheridan Kay Quilting Studio stepped in and recreated a quilt for him. His only recollection of the quilt design was that it had a large yellow star in the center. From that description, Sheridan used EQ7 to design his new “Shining Star” quilt with a white background and yellow stars, thus restoring a special piece of his childhood that the fire consumed.
Sheridan has graciously shared her simple-to-construct Shining Star pattern, which is easy for beginning quilters and experienced quilters alike. It requires only two fabrics and allows you to use one of those fabrics in your collection that you just couldn’t bear to cut up! It also looks great with an overall quilting design as Sheridan has shown on her quilt, or you can go crazy with quilting thanks to the ample negative space the pattern provides. In either case your quilt will be a stunner!
Since Sheridan uses her Shining Star quilt as a tablecloth, she wanted it to be versatile. To make it reversible, she chose an autumn floral print for the stars but she used red backing fabric to carry her into the Christmas season. The great stitch quality of her APQS Lucey machine gave her the confidence to select Glide thread in Light Olive to blend with the gold background fabric while allowing her to choose a sage-colored bobbin thread for contrast on the red backing. She chose a digitized overall design called Jacobean Blossom by Jessica Schick to enhance both sides of the quilt.
Sheridan designed quilts and quilted for others for several years in her personal studio before opening Sheridan Kay Quilting as a public quilting studio in Hendersonville, NC in April of 2014. Since then hundreds of quilters have taken the certification class to advance their long arm skills and have completed their projects renting APQS machines. The studio hosts groups and individual classes year round to share their passion for quilting.
Southern hospitality fills the studio to the brim! Sheridan added, “As the owner of Sheridan Kay Quilting, my goal is for every person to feel welcome and comfortable in our studio. We have an open heart and open door teaching concept. We will meet you where you are on your quilting journey. New beginners and seasoned quilters stop in the see the latest developments and share their knowledge and experience. It’s very rewarding to be in the family of quilters. We have loads of fun!” What a great place to pursue your quilting passion!
We hope you enjoy making Sheridan’s Shining Star quilt and that you will use it to create great memories of your own!
