Free quilt pattern: Sand Surf and Sun
When you live in Lethbridge, Alberta, it can sometimes take until May for the snow to melt enough to break out the flip-flops. But APQS Dealer Jenny Root of Finely Quilted isn’t waiting on Mother Nature to give her a reason to slip off her sneakers! Her cute flip-flop pattern will get you thinking of summer and scheduling a pedicure for sure.
To save cutting time, Jenny used a Layer Cake™ fabric stack called “Hunky Dory” by Chez Moi of Moda fabrics. A Moda Layer Cake™ is a 10” x 10” stack of 42 assorted fabrics. However, this quilt is just perfect for using up lots of scraps! The quilt goes together even faster by using fusible webbing to attach the applique pieces. Jenny used a simple machine sewn blanket stitch to finish the applique raw edges, but if you need some handwork to get you through to summer, you could also finish the flip-flop edges with a blanket stitch by hand.
Jenny cleverly brought the surf to her quilt with the perfect pantograph quilting design that mimics swirling water.
The pattern is called “Ripples” from Urban Elementz. Magic Mint Green Glide thread blends marvelously across the various flip-flop fabrics as well as the background, sashing and border fabrics.
Since Jenny chose to use the same Grunge Moda fabric for the binding as well as the outer border and sashing squares, she added a contrasting flange as she attached the border to add some drama to the quilt.
This quilt goes together quickly, and would be a great way to get a young beach lover into quilting.
