Just because it’s a spine, doesn’t mean it has to be “feathered”! Everything from spikes and razor wire to curls and leaves, to flowers and bat wings to name but a few….It’s a ton of fun quilting outside the box. Depending on the feel, mood and style of your quilt, you may want any manner of shapes popping of that spine. If that’s the case, this is the class for you! A spine is simply a way for your designs/motifs to travel across or around your quilt and just about any shape can be adapted to flow along one. Firstly, we lay the foundation of how to travel along a spine to ensure a clean, polished look to your work. Then, we’re going to get “fun and funky” popping all manner of interesting things on those spines to create border treatments, motifs and edge-to-edge designs. You’ll have a blast in this class as we build our repertoire and add to our toolbox of ideas to give some interesting twists to those quilts! All skill levels welcome.

Who doesn’t love a good background filler? No custom-quilted quilt is truly finished until the filler work has been completed. I have always thought of this part of the quilting as “the cherry on top.” This beloved part of the custom quilting process is so important and serves so many different purposes. Enhancing applique, adding interest to backgrounds, breeding up negative space, popping motifs, etc. – we need to take careful consideration of all these things when deciding the what, when, where and why of using moderately dense, really dense or micro-stitch quilting to your quilt. We’ll begin with easy-to-stitch (yet effective) shapes, then morph and embellish those ideas into spectacular, stand-out, loud-and-proud textures that will take that quilt from fabulous to fantastically fabulous! Experience as the magic happens while we build freehand and creative skills, all while creating that incredible tactile texture we all love so much.
