Fire and Ice
Claudia Pfeil of Krefeld, Germany entered "Fire and Ice" at the 2009 MQS Quilt Show in the Theme category. Claudia writes this about her quilt:
Peer through the window, watch as two worlds collide. Flames from the earth reaching ever higher. Flames, curling, licking the icy, cold air, seeking the snowy fluffy flakes and their coolness. Even so the snowflakes seek the warmth of the flames, never knowing the heat they seek will dissolve them to beads, mere droplets of water. In the world outsidethe window, two worlds collide in the cold, crisp air. Fire and Ice was pieced using my free cuttingand piecing method for the flames. The snowflakes were paper pieced and the background was piecedusing a watercolor technique, with color graduating from white to dark blue and yellow to dark red. The black and white border was piece giving the border an optical illusion 'window frame' for the viewer to look out at the two opposites. Embellished with Razzle Dazzle thread (couching) and Swarovski Crystals.
